The community (the studio portraits)
The community".
The community (the studio portraits)
In 2018, in collaboration with artist and art therapist Jacqueline Boyle, I directed a series of black and white portraits of the artists and workers of the Sunapple Studio at ARC Industries Inc, an institution offering training and employment to adults with developmental disabilities, enabling them to gain greater independence and autonomy. This series is part of a larger project entitled "The community", focusing on the representation of people living with disabilities in our society. The portraits are taken in the studio where the artists produce daily works of art (paintings, ceramics, collages, etc.), which they then sell at fairs or exhibit in galleries. For the occasion, some of them took part in the creation of the photo backdrop, large swathes of jute painted by hand and then stabilized in large dryers. On the day of the shoot, I asked the artists to bring an outfit they loved and felt comfortable in.
The pleasure and curiosity of being exposed to the light of the flash can be seen on most of these faces.
